Thanks for this video, complete insanity what scams people fall for these days. Only way this would actually be worth it, is if the NBA actually sold the copyrights to the highlight. This is just a bunch of idiots, like you said, buying static.

I don’t think y’all understand. People are just paying thousands of dollars for these virtual products to put their money in their system. Like you said, they use crypto to store your money. All this website is is a way to turn your money into crypto so you can use that crypto to buy things on the dark web. And your purchases aren’t traceable

Yup. You have put your finger squarely on what is wrong with any market which serves as a venue for selling or buying anything without an absolute intrinsic value. Food has intrinsic value. A 1963 split window Corvette does not. It is now and was then a mediocre POS car. Any capitalist market which operates without any oversight by Us, The People will always default to an abusive trolling for suckers. This very dynamic is the engine that drives inflation - greed and valuation untethered to any real world intrinsic worth. Society has an unlimited supply of grifters and shills, and an equally bottomless well of suckers hoping to transmogrify their suckerhood into grifter status. You have earned my eternal admiration for holding your LeBron rookie card regardless of what some sad moron is willing to pay for it.

If someone wants to be that stupid and pay upwards of $10,000 for a highlight they can get for free on USplan. Fuck em . If they can afford 30k for a 7second highlight then clearly money isn't a problem for them.

I kinda have to say that while I agree that these are completely insane, I don't really see the difference with trading cards. The basic idea of crafting an artificially collectible "item" (physical or digital), and letting people attribute value to it is the same. The value of a trading card is not in the fine craftsmanship of the painted cardboard itself, or in owning an exclusive picture, it is in the owning right of an item arbitrarily perceived as valuable. When someone buys a super expensive trading card, it is not because the card is so great itself, it's because they want to be known as "the one who owns [such or such rare card]". You're basically buying bragging rights. It's exactly the same here, anyone can look at the same highlights on youtube (just like anyone can google the picture in their favorite Lebron card), but you buy a digital code saying "I am the one who purchased the 23th edition of this clip on this website". Is it ridiculous? Yes. Is it more ridiculous than other trading cards? I personally don't think so. On the other hand, I feel that it is different from collecting actual things, which were made for an independent purpose (stamps, bottle caps, postcards, whatever). Because those objects can have actual rarity, that was not manufactured for the sole purpose of creating a speculation bubble. I can understand someone getting excited about owning a 1972 Chinese glass coaster that is basically impossible to find (though I could hardly care less personally).

I think you need to do some research about blockchain. Also whats a better way of collecting a player's history than having one of their most famous plays? or a moment from a game you went to in person?

  • Andrea Bay
    Andrea Bay4 days ago

I actually thought they partnered with NBA to make sure theyre the only ones who can show the clips of the cards they sold. but this is clearly not the case. the thing is, TopShot gets some fee for every trasaction, so it's in their interest to have these things be valueable. imagine the seller and buyer both pays 1% thru topshot.. and they sell millions of cards? it's like Crypto currencies with places selling and buying them. they can be very profitable. but now it's digital art cryptos

  • Andrea Bay
    Andrea Bay4 days ago

cool video, I saw topshots website when i browsed through the other side of this "NFT" thing. Which is digital art, minted in certain serial #'s, again, there may be 100 versions of this digital artwork with a special code so you have a unique artwork. So it's like selling prints and saying we will only sell X prints. or cards edit: but you dont actualy have the artwork on ur wall when you buy it....

12:22 you don't understand nfts, block chain. It does have scarcity. It has the same scarcity as any physical card, actually more, because you can examine the block chain and see how many there are, and physical cards.. you have to just take their word on it. (Btw block chain is an immutable ledger, meaning once it's set it can't be fkd with, if it is everyone sees it) Your comments about they can just make more, is akin to someone saying that someone can just print more LeBron rookies. Technically they can, and do actually counterfeits are huge, but the replicas are worthless, but why? Because they are not the original, it's the same with virtual assets. Any "copy" or clip will be seen as just that a copy or clip, only those that are linked to the block chain will be authentic, and this is why they have value over a USplan clip. To be clear: block chain technology allows virtual assets to be verifiably rare/limited. This doesn't take away any other form of the media, just like making a basketball card doesn't take away the ability to make more of them, but it makes what is on the block chain "provably scarce". Top shot aside(because it's way too speculative and investment driven mania rn), this idea is real, give it time it'll start making more sense.

  • M Frusciante
    M Frusciante5 days ago

When something is seen to have value by people, that essentially essentially gives it intrinsic value. Like it or not virtual assets are a thing, and will become more and more accepted. The thing that makes it go is the fact that digital items can be verifiably rare. Yes it's not the exact same as a physical item, there's no condition issues, and you can't hold them, but it's still a rare item. To say that "well I can just get the clip off USplan" is like saying "well I can just get a picture of LeBron's rookie card", or "I can just get a counterfeit version of it". Both technically correct, but both not the actual provably rare item that has value. Yea today's market is mostly driven by investment speculation, but this idea will last, and in decades from now some of these digital collectibles will be worth a fortune, because the kids growing up now will as adults see them as the first version of something they see as collectible. The real reckoning will be when ar and vr go mainstream with global use and development, virtual collectibles will be as normal as any physical collectible. You have to see the virtual as now tangible. Things always unfold differently than you would hv expected, and virtual collectibles/assets is the way things are going to go, would be wise to recognize it and try to capitalize in some way. Just to note, imo top shot is not the best implementation of block chain assets, but it's leading the way. The thing about collectibles is: it is based on what the human brain perceives as valuable. Anything at all can have value as long as the brain perceives it to. Right now, people are used to only physical items having value, but that's your brain stuck in a box. When you get outside of the box you realize that digital items, with block chain are actually a better way to do it. "Verifiably rare".

I jumped into it because I thought it was kinda cool. I have purchased 3 packs, and other moments of players that I like. Even though I've been on it a few months now, I will be honest and say that I originally joined because I was hoping to recapture some of that feeling I had collecting cards in the 80's/90's. I think its a cool concept, but its being tainted already because it just feels like its not for "Fans" at this point, it just people looking to invest and flip. Im in it to grab clips of players I like. My 9 year old Son watch my new pack opening with me tonight and he thought it was so cool...BUT I dont think its something that will keep his interest if he had his own moments like his physical Pokemon cards because he can consume as much NBA highlights as he wants on there platforms. Its crazy that the "value" and actual worth of these Top Shot moments is literally made up out of NOWHERE! It makes me feel like this is more about the "crypto" movement than something cool for Sports Fans! Now with it being all digital, the potential to do cool and unique things is incredible...for instance say you can get a special rare moment from a game you attendend if you register your ticket stub on Topshot, NOW THAT would be awesome and truly rare and unique to that specific game! Im a Sixers fan, what if i attended a game and Simmons hits a 3! And Top Shot made a special moment of that, but it was only available as a verified attendee of the game! Thats would be incredible, valuable, and rare because it would only be limited most, the number of tickets that were purchased for the game! And don't have that clip available in a regular Top shot pack! It has potential, and I think it will be even more popular moving forward once the "Early Leeches" stop making it so damn expensive because its just about flipping and money to them. Top Shot has to find a way to make this affordable for fans AND KIDS...and mimic the way physical cards were accessible to everyone, but still had special edition stuff and things that make them truly valuable. Ive only invested around $300 in it so far, and I have 22 total moments. But Im going to stay in it for a while and see how it goes. I have some original series 1 moments but mostly series 2...think those will be key to hold on to for when ever Top Shot moves out of their "Beta" phase and allows more people to sign up! I believe new customer sign ups are still on freeze. But this is really about a new product and new ways for fans to enjoy a sport...there is alot of cool things that can potentially be done since its digital media and can be verified via the blockchain, we shall see!

Could it be so because they are dreaming of a future where no copyrighted material will be available to public eye for free? Dunno man, just look back at the past. For example, there were no companies streaming films online charging money, but now it is getting more and more impossible to watch something free online. Even USplan is forcing you to get a membership.

I own NFT licensed 3D of Batman that are selling for $10k Did you check beeple art sale. $56 million. Agree this is foolish but so to was twinkies on eBay for $10k. It will go the way of the Bernie babies and card craze but for now just burn baby. Famous phrase in the stock market. The market will remain irrational longer than you can remain liquid, paraphrasing. Just ride the wave and maybe collect what is out of favor now so when rational comes back you own the real thing.

You need to learn more about blockchain. Transactions which have an immutable history. So value will come from this, who has held it in the past, when it was minted, its number, etc. So, yes, they're virtual but DO have a lot of the attributes (and more) of physical cards.
