Len Bias died of cocaine overdose. Drug addiction isn't the best start to an elite sport career. MJ didn't take drugs.

As far as I know Michael never did any drug, not even alcohol. Len Bias died of a siezure while snorting coke 2 days after his draft pick to the Celtics. When you want something so bad you reject all distractions, you burn past the people who want a little of everything.

Most folks don't like my philosophy about team sports. But hey, that's ok, we all have opinions and our rights to them. Basketball is a team sport, so to be a GOAT you can't just be the best player, you have to be the Best Leader. You have to be able to bring out the best in your teammates. He got the "Leader" quality trait after being in the leagues 6 yrs. He realized it wasn't a one man show and he couldn't do it alone. So it took him 6 yrs to realize this, 6 yrs to MATURE. It Also took LbJ 8 yrs to get his (the reasons were slightly different, but...). But there are GOATS that showed Maturity and leadership (to be a Good leader you have to know how to follow too) from day one and others, well like MJ, that have/had to grow into it. Magic Johnson, came out of college and led LA to a title the 1st yr (not after 6). Tim Duncan, OMG, after his 2nd yr on the team (such an Unselfish guy), Kareem, 2nd yr in the league. OMG and the BIG Bill Russell: Gold Medal In Basket Ball at the olympics in 56 and NBA champ with the celtics in '57, his rookie yr, first of 11 RINGS. Folks, the era is secondary, because you do whatever it takes to win in YOUR time, and Bill was pretty good at that. In my book you wanna be the ONLY GOAT, you gotta lead in EVERY category, BUT MJ DOES NOT. As a matter of fact Statistically he ranks 4th or 5th. But I don't want to get off topic. So that is why I, ME, I can't put MJ as the GOAT. He is a CO-GOAT but not THEE GOAT. THERE ARE just are too many important category where he comes up short. The Leadership quality trait/plays well with others trait/trust in you teammates trait, is Paramount with me when it comes to Team sports. But we all saw how well he did in Golf (where you're left to your own devices). And when you have to rely on others when you are NOT the best, like in Base Ball, his true colors showed. Anyway, I digressed. So that's JMHO.

Man, I saw Lennie a week before his death on the campus of NC State visiting a girl he was dating. When Lennie was a junior, he was asked why he didn’t come out, his response was that he chose to stay for his senior season because, “I want to be as good as Jordan.” Nowadays kids come out regardless if they are ready. A little backdrop on Jordan and the 5 Star camp that summer- Jordan had dominated the Carolina camp and Dean Smith didn’t want anyone to know about him. UNC assistant coach Roy Williams thought Mike could benefit from playing against the nation’s best and arranged for an invite to the camp, not knowing his boss really wanted to keep Mike under wraps. Coach Smith wasn’t pleased because Mike got tons of offers after being named MVP of one of the weeks.

I went to Bias's rival high school High Point... And man that kid was a joy to watch play.. The DC/MD/VA area is known for producing ballers but that dude was the king. He was LeBron before Lebron. Had size and athleticism never seen before.. I actually have one of his Northwestern Wildcats high school jerseys. Sad loss to the sports world and especially Terps fans

@Johnny Dangerous You just said Bias was 6'8".. Jordan was always listed at 6'5" - 6'6".. Yet theyre the same size?? Come on man.. Theres no reason to argue this. I never said your boy Lebron was a bad player. I just said Bias had a similar build and skill set before Lebron. Why you getting so offended? You can pretend that 25 LBS is some huuuge difference but it isn't. Even if you wanna take Lebron at age 22 and Bias at age 22, by that point Lebron had access to the best training, work out regimen, fitness, and nutrition for 4 years... Bias was still eating Ramen and saltines living a student athlete lifestyle. I'm not taking anything away from Lebron. I'm just saying there were others with his style of play at his size long before he came around

  • Bryan C

    Bryan C

@Johnny Dangerous you're talking about Lebron today.. Not Lebron when he was at the same stage in his career as Bias.. When they were drafted they were only 25 LBS different and the exact same height.. Like i said they were much closer in size than you think.. But i get the sense you might be a BronBron fanboy so this conversation is probably pointless

  • Johnny Dangerous

    Johnny Dangerous

@Bryan C LeBron also came straight outta highschool and Len Bias went to college for 3 years. The Lebron you listed was a boy while the Len you listed was a man. LeBron at 22-23 was 250lbs and he has been listed as 6'9" for quite a while. When watching Bias and Jordan play each other they look to be the same size.

  • Johnny Dangerous

  • Bryan C

    Bryan C

@Johnny Dangerous what?? I think you need to look into things and do at least a little bit of research before you just spout off nonsense.. Depending on which source you use Lebron was 6'8" and about 230LBS when drafted... Bias was 6'8" and about 210LBS... You consider that to be nowhere near the same size?? I think you just don't know what you're talking about my friend.. No worries though. Everybody is wrong from time to time. No reason to be ashamed of yourself.

To this day I’ve yet to be as excited about a draft as I was when Len Bias was picked by Boston. The insane implications of that acquisition. Celtics Lakers. Celtics Bulls. Celtics Pistons. Celtics Jazz. Celtics Trailblazers. The matchups that never were. Bias vs Malone, Hakeem, Shawn Kemp, Jabar, Magic. Not to mention his Boston teammates. They’d just won the title without him. They didn’t even need him. Holy shit what could’ve been. RIP Len. F’real. I’m still sad.
